Questions and answers about PA, ENS and VAS systems
In our FAQs, we answer the most frequently asked questions about public address systems (PA), electroacoustic emergency warning systems (ENS) and voice alarm systems (VAS). Our aim is to make planning, operation and maintenance easier for you.
Basics
What is a PA system?
PA systems distribute speech and music reliably throughout buildings or outdoor areas. Typical features include 100 V speaker lines for long cable runs, multiple zones and even sound coverage.
What is a VAS?
A VAS (voice alarm system) is a safety-critical variant of a PA system that provides automated, intelligible voice announcements in an emergency – standards-compliant, monitored and with emergency power. The aim is to enable fast, orderly evacuation and help prevent panic.
What is the difference between a PA system and a VAS?
A PA system (public address system) is used for general sound reinforcement, music playback and announcements. A VAS (voice alarm system) is standards-compliant in accordance with DIN VDE 0833-4, certified according to EN 54 and required for fire evacuation. While PA systems are primarily used for comfort and information, VAS systems are safety-critical.
What are PA systems used for?
PA systems are used to provide even sound coverage in buildings and outdoor areas, whether for background music, announcements or emergency information. Typical areas of use include schools, hotels, shopping centres, sports halls and train stations.
When is a voice alarm system (VAS) required?
VAS systems are required whenever evacuation via loudspeakers is necessary in the event of a fire. This is the case, for example, in large assembly venues, shopping centres, hospitals or high-rise buildings.
What advantages does a VAS offer over sirens?
Voice announcements are understood more quickly than acoustic signals. They help prevent panic, guide people out of the building in a targeted manner and therefore improve safety.
Technology & products
What does 100 V technology mean?
100 V amplifiers feed many speakers over long distances with minimal losses. Each speaker has a transformer with power taps, for example 1/3/6/12 W, for local level adjustment.
What types of speakers are available?
Ceiling speakers, wall-mounted speakers, cabinet speakers, horn speakers and special-purpose speakers are available. For VAS applications, EN 54-24 certified models must be used.
What defines a call station?
Call stations enable targeted announcements to specific zones, priorities such as fire brigade or priority calls, buttons with status LEDs and often microphone monitoring.
Versions: desktop, wall-mounted and fire brigade call stations.
Do I need emergency power?
For VAS: yes, required by standards (EN 54-4).
For PA systems only: recommended if operational reliability is important, for example in schools, halls or transport facilities.
Can I continue using existing speakers?
This depends on whether the existing speakers are EN 54-24 certified. For VAS applications, only certified models may be used. For PA systems only, continued use is usually possible.
What does “zone sound coverage” mean?
A building is divided into individual areas, or zones. Each zone can be addressed or supplied with sound separately. This makes targeted announcements possible, for example only in the foyer or on a specific floor.
Standards & certificates
Which standards do your systems comply with?
Depending on the project: DIN EN 54-16 (control units), DIN EN 54-24 (speakers), DIN EN 54-4 (power supply/emergency power), DIN EN 50849 (formerly EN 60849) and DIN VDE 0833-4. Our production in Bad Aibling is certified according to DIN EN ISO 9001:2015.
Why are these standards important?
They ensure intelligibility, monitoring and fail-safe operation, and provide legal and planning certainty for acceptance, operation and maintenance.
Planning & implementation
How does the planning of a PA or VAS system work?
Planning begins with a needs analysis: Which zones, which areas and which sound pressure levels are required? Suitable speakers, amplifiers and control elements are then selected. Finally, the system is integrated into the fire protection or building technology.
How is speech intelligibility ensured?
Speech intelligibility is ensured through careful selection and placement of the speakers, coordinated sound levels and acoustic measurements, such as ambient noise levels, RT60 or STI-PA measurements. This is the only way to ensure that announcements are clearly understood even in noisy environments.
Installation & operation
Who is allowed to install a VAS?
Only qualified specialist companies with proven experience in the field of voice alarm systems may install a VAS. Installation must be carried out in accordance with DIN 14675 certification requirements.
How is the VAS integrated into the fire alarm system (FAS)?
The connection is made via standardized interfaces. Events from the FAS, such as fire compartments or predefined scenarios, trigger the VAS with stored evacuation procedures.
What documentation is required?
Complete documentation includes planning documents, measurement reports, certificates, declarations of performance and an operating logbook. These documents are mandatory for acceptance and operation.
How often does testing need to be carried out?
EN 54 requires regular inspections: daily self-tests, monthly visual checks and comprehensive annual maintenance by a specialist company.
Practice & support
How flexible is system expansion?
Our systems are modular in design. This means that additional zones, speakers or call stations can be retrofitted at any time without having to replace the entire system.
What happens if a speaker fails?
In monitored systems, each speaker circuit is continuously checked. Faults such as short circuits or interruptions are reported immediately and can be resolved in a targeted manner.
How do I get support in the event of a fault?
You can contact us via our RMA form, by phone or through remote maintenance. We provide fast and reliable support, including spare parts from our in-house production.
Do you offer seminars?
Yes. We offer training courses for planners and installers on PA/VAS systems, standards and software configuration. Dates can be found under Seminars.
